Why Use Proof of Original?

A private, free way to get a trustworthy date for your work, built on the open OpenTimestamps standard and the Bitcoin blockchain.

🔒

Private by Design — File Never Uploaded

Your file is fingerprinted inside your browser. Videos, drafts, contracts and source code never leave your device. Only a 32-byte hash, which cannot be reversed, is sent for timestamping.

⛓️

Bitcoin-Anchored Timestamp

The hash is submitted to public OpenTimestamps calendar servers and committed to the Bitcoin blockchain. Nobody, including us, can backdate or alter the date afterwards.

📁

Works With Any File, Any Size

Video, image, PDF, audio, zip, PSD, code or text. The file is read in small chunks, so even multi-GB videos can be fingerprinted without freezing your browser.

🏅

Certificate PNG + JSON Record

Download a clean certificate image with the file name, size, SHA-256 hash, certificate ID and timestamp status, plus a JSON record for your archive or portfolio.

✅

Verify Anytime, Anywhere

Use the Verify tab with the original file and the .ots proof. You can also use opentimestamps.org, so you never depend on this site to prove your date.

🆓

Free, No Signup, No Watermark

No account, no email, no daily limit. Built on the open OpenTimestamps standard, so your proofs stay valid even if this website disappears.

Free Proof of Original: Prove Your File Existed Before a Date

When your work is copied, reposted or claimed by someone else, the first question is simple: who had it first? A file's "date modified" can be changed in seconds, and a screenshot of a folder proves nothing. A cryptographic timestamp solves this. It gives you neutral, third-party evidence that a file with exactly this content existed on or before a specific date, without trusting any company, including this website.

What is a SHA-256 hash (file fingerprint)?

A SHA-256 hash is a 64-character code calculated from the exact bytes of a file. The same file always produces the same hash, while changing a single pixel, letter or frame produces a completely different one. The hash cannot be reversed, so sharing it reveals nothing about the content. That is why this tool only sends the hash for timestamping, and your video, design or document stays on your device.

How does OpenTimestamps and Bitcoin make the date trustworthy?

OpenTimestamps is a free, open standard. Public calendar servers collect many hashes, combine them into a single value and commit that value into a Bitcoin transaction. Once that transaction is in a Bitcoin block, nobody can alter the date, because changing it would mean rewriting the Bitcoin blockchain. Your .ots file contains the path that links your hash to that block, so anyone can verify it independently, even if this website no longer exists.

Pending vs confirmed proof

Immediately after you click Create Proof, the proof is pending: your hash has been accepted by the calendar servers but is not in a Bitcoin block yet. This usually takes a few hours. Keep the .ots file and, later, upload it with your original file on opentimestamps.org to upgrade it into a fully confirmed proof that shows the exact block date. Save the upgraded file in place of the old one.

What this proof does and does not show

  • It shows that a file with exactly this content existed on or before the confirmed date.
  • It does not show who created the file. Combine it with drafts, project files, raw footage, emails and exports to build a stronger case.
  • It is not a formal copyright registration or legal advice. Courts and platforms may treat it as supporting technical evidence, depending on your country.
  • It only matches the exact file. Compressing, re-exporting or editing the file creates a new fingerprint, so keep the untouched original.

Best practices for creators

  • Timestamp your raw project and final export before you publish or send drafts to anyone.
  • Store the original file, the .ots proof and the certificate together in at least two places (Drive and a pendrive).
  • Do not rename-and-resave the original. Copy it if you need to work on it, and keep the first file intact.
  • Use the Verify Proof tab once after downloading to confirm that the file and the proof match.
  • After a few hours, upgrade the proof on opentimestamps.org and replace the pending .ots with the confirmed one.
  • For high-value work, also keep dated drafts, project files and communication, which show how the work was created.

Why a certificate image and JSON record?

The certificate PNG is a readable summary for portfolios, clients and disputes: file name, size, SHA-256 hash, a certificate ID and the timestamp status. The JSON record is the same data in machine-readable form for your archive. Neither replaces the .ots file: the trusted date comes only from the Bitcoin-anchored proof, not from the image or from your device clock.

Preparing files first? Reduce image size with our Image Compressor before you timestamp the final version, or protect your published images with the Watermark Tool. Remember to timestamp the exact file you plan to keep as the original.

Frequently Asked Questions

Proof of Original is a free tool that creates a verifiable, date-stamped fingerprint of your file. It calculates a SHA-256 hash in your browser and anchors that hash to the Bitcoin blockchain through OpenTimestamps. Later you can show the original file and the .ots proof to demonstrate that a file with exactly that content existed on or before that date.

No. The SHA-256 hash is calculated entirely inside your browser and the file never leaves your device. Only the 32-byte hash is sent to the public OpenTimestamps calendar servers, and a hash cannot be turned back into your file.

It proves that a file with exactly this content existed on or before the timestamp date. It does not by itself prove who created it. It is strong supporting evidence when combined with drafts, project files, raw footage, emails and other records of how you made the work.

Right after you click Create Proof the proof is pending. The calendar servers batch many hashes into one Bitcoin transaction, which usually confirms within a few hours. Keep the .ots file, then upload it with your original on opentimestamps.org later to upgrade it to a fully confirmed proof.

The .ots file is your proof receipt. It contains the fingerprint of your file and the data needed to link it to a Bitcoin block. It is tiny, usually 1-2 KB, and does not contain your file. Without it you cannot prove the date, so store it safely next to the original.

The SHA-256 hash changes completely, so the old proof will no longer match. Re-saving, compressing, renaming with re-export or editing a file creates a different fingerprint. Always keep the exact original file untouched.

Open the Verify Proof tab, select the original file and its .ots proof, and click Verify. The tool recalculates the hash and compares it with the one stored in the proof. For the full Bitcoin block check, upload both files on opentimestamps.org.

A blockchain timestamp is technical evidence of existence at a point in time. How much weight a court or platform gives it depends on the country and the case. It does not replace formal copyright registration, so speak to a lawyer for legal advice.

There is no fixed limit. Files are read in small chunks, so large videos work, and the speed depends on your device. Very large files simply take longer to fingerprint.

The certificate image shows your device time for reference only. The trusted date comes from the Bitcoin-anchored .ots proof once it is confirmed, because your computer clock can be changed but the blockchain cannot.

Yes. It is completely free with no signup, no watermark and no daily limit. OpenTimestamps is an open standard, so your proof does not depend on this website staying online.

You can create a new proof, but it will carry the new date, not the old one. The original date is only provable with the original .ots file, so back it up in Drive, email or a pendrive together with your original file.
